Petrovietnam and Samsung Heavy Industries aim for strategic cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.
(PetroTimes) - On May 14, Le Manh Hung, Chairman of the Member Council of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), had a meeting and working session with a delegation from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) led by Executive Vice President Namgoong Geumsung. For Petrovietnam, this is not only an opportunity to access and gain deeper insights into advanced shipbuilding technologies, especially smart shipbuilding technology from one of the world's leading partners, but also an occasion to concretize cooperation directions and enhance the capabilities of the member unit PVSM, thereby contributing to modernizing the domestic shipbuilding industry.
From Samsung Heavy Industries' perspective, the meeting opens up prospects for extensive cooperation in the Vietnamese market, a country with an increasing demand for industrial and energy infrastructure development. Establishing a relationship with a key energy industrial group in Vietnam like Petrovietnam will provide a solid foundation for SHI in implementing future projects.During the working session, Namgoong Geumsung, Executive Vice President of SHI, provided information about the company's key operational areas, particularly smart shipbuilding technology, which is one of the company's spearhead fields.
Regarding the scale and international experience, Mr. Namgoong Geumsung stated that SHI's global network operates in many countries such as Russia, China, Brazil, and Nigeria. SHI will provide partners with shipbuilding equipment and materials that meet international quality standards, while also being ready to offer comprehensive support in the transfer of advanced production technology. The cooperation program also includes activities for in-depth workforce training and strategic consulting aimed at optimizing operations while enhancing the efficiency of partner shipyards.
Mr. Namgoong Geumsung, Executive Vice President of SHI, hopes that SHI will have more opportunities to collaborate with Petrovietnam and the member units of the Group.
Mr. Namgoong Geumsung affirmed that SHI can provide advanced shipbuilding skill sets and support the development of detailed assembly plans, ensuring compliance with strict labor safety standards and a comprehensive quality management system. Additionally, SHI is ready to send top experts directly to the partner's facilities. This team will be responsible for on-site workforce training and supporting testing, ensuring that the technology transfer process runs smoothly and achieves the highest efficiency.
With specific and comprehensive cooperation proposals, the Executive Vice President of SHI expressed the desire for SHI to have more opportunities to collaborate with Petrovietnam and its member units, which have extensive experience and expertise in shipbuilding, opening a new chapter for the joint development of both parties.

During the meeting, Chairman of the Petrovietnam Council Lê Mạnh Hùng informed SHI leaders about Petrovietnam's business activities and some strategic directions for the upcoming period. Mr. Lê Mạnh Hùng stated that Petrovietnam has transformed its model from the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group to the Vietnam National Industry and Energy Group. Accordingly, in addition to traditional energy sources, Petrovietnam is promoting the development of green energy and renewable energy sources in line with the strong global energy transition trends.
Regarding the shipbuilding sector, the Chairman of the Petrovietnam Council noted that the Petrovietnam Shipbuilding and Mechanical Industry Company (PVSM), a unit under the Group, would be a suitable partner for cooperation programs with SHI. Based on the strengths of each party, Petrovietnam and SHI can fully coordinate to implement shipbuilding projects, as well as collaborate in researching and developing new, modern ship models for the Vietnamese market.
